Synopsis:

Think you’re pretty smart? Turn the pages to play your moves and watch as Tic Tac Tome beats you forward, backward, and diagonally. Tic Tac Tome features more than 1,400 pages, hundreds of draws and losses, and just one way for a clever reader to win. No apps, batteries, or touch screens required—Tic Tac Tome is powered by good old-fashioned book smarts. It’s deceptively simple, endlessly addictive, and (nearly) impossible to defeat. Complete with introduction and FAQs for the unfamiliar and unsure, Tic Tac Tome is the smartest book you’ll ever cross.

I received an early copy from Quirk Books in exchange for an honest review. This fact in no shape or form affects my review. Except for the existence of the review itself. I received no compensation for this review in any way. This is my honest opinion of the work.

Well. This book was incredibly frustrating. It came at the most opportune moment too! I don't think I've ever said it before, but I'm looking to go into Computer Sciences in university. So in my computer sciences course at school, we were learning Objective-C, the language used to write Iphone Apps. Our latest task was to create a Tic Tac Toe app!

Anyways, this was a lot of fun and the book is so snarky and arrogant. It's hilarious. It refers to itself as if it were really a sentient being.
Q: You may be good at Tic-Tac-Toe but seem to lack friends and have no social life.

A: On the contrary, one of my best friends is a chess-playing book. However, we aren't able to get together as often as I might like due to his mobility issues. Also I do note that this wasn't a question, but more of a statement. But I answered because I felt sorry for you.
That answer is easily one of my favourite parts of this book.

I always stalemated in my games against the book. I refused to let it win and it was difficult to win against the book, as that's the whole point of it. The only way to win is when the book makes a mistake somewhere, allowing you to win. It's an elusive thing that must be fought for.

Here is an instagram video I made of me playing the book. Of course I stalemated with the book. Like I'm going to let it win. Ha!

You can find another one on my instagram: @Astaraya

Anyways, I didn't find the path to victory until I made my friends play it and some of them, the cheaters that they are, flipped to find the page with the winning combination and backtracked. So technically I didn't "win" against the book, because I cheated, but whatever, I found the combination. Hahaha. I obviously won't be posting that though.

This book is a lot of fun and a whole lot frustrating. Though it was a lot of fun and full of snark, it wasn't the most mind blowing thing in the world. Give it a try. Maybe you can figure out the pathway to victory unlike me.

Tic Tac Tome releases June 10th.

Happy gaming, y'all!
