Synopsis:
Jasmine’s life wasn’t normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn’t been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn’t bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.
In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn’t keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily…or not.
I received an e-ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This fact in no shape or form affects my review. Except for the existence of the review itself. I received no compensation for this review in any way. This is my honest opinion of the work.
Have I said that I have a thing for accents? BREATHE takes place in Louisiana and there's of course a swoonworthy Southern gentleman in this book. Seriously, Easton is pretty swoonworthy with his gentlemanly ways and how sweet he is to Jas.
I really enjoyed Jas' s character. She has a pair of twins as younger siblings, Caedan and Lily. Jas has an ongoing prank war with her brother and it's pretty hilarious. He calls her a Slytherin and she's definitely that. She's smart, loyal and cunning. She was really smart in the way that she dealt with the Monster.
Also, I felt like I was reading the equivalent of an episode of a crime show, though from the victim's point of view. There were definitely instances where creepy things happened to Jas, but there was never any indication as to who was doing it. I think it was pretty accurate as to what the victims usually feel. They never know who it is until it happens. Also, I had a pretty creepy vibe from the beginning, though thay may have just been me because I was listening to Lana Del Rey as I read it.
I think that my favourite character out of them all is Jas. She is so slytherin and i could definitely relate to some of the things she said. I wish that she wasn't portrayed as one of those girls that are unaware of their beauty. It's just so cliché. Anyways, there's an epilogue to Breathe so i wonder what the sequel, Shimmer is about.
Happy Reading!
