Synopsis:

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.
Five out of five flakes!

So I was in a bit of a burn out from reading so much during the Bout of Books Readathon and I started to read The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson and I just couldn't get into it. I love fantasy, don't get me wrong. Then I picked this book up and I devoured it in one sitting. I think I'm in a contemporary binge right now, which is weird in itself, but it's just what I'm needing right now. Literally, as I write this review, my Chapters/Indigo shopping cart has three contemporaries in it along with The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan, which is mainly only there because I don't own it and I need it to complete my set.

Anyways, onto the review. This was really good. There was a tone of mystery to the book that was thankfully only a fraction of what it was in We Were Liars, because I don't know how much my heart could take of books like that. I found a dream like quality to this book that I loved because it made the summer feel like a dream that ends when September comes.

I enjoyed learning about Conrad and Jeremiah. They were interesting and I really love Susannah. The stories of their memories was entertaining and it made me really wish to have summers like theirs at a beach house. Reading the synopsis of this book was weird for me, because all I could think of was, "Who names their kid Belly?" I was very much relieved to find out that her name is not really Belly. Thank goodness.

I don't have any quotes to pull from this book because I mainly devoured it and had no time to flag quotes. This book just made me really reminiscent of my own summers spent in the Carribeans on the beach. I'm not much of a beach person unless I'm already at the beach, so this book did manage to give me that.

This book makes my heart ache and makes me really melancholic about summers past. I can really imagine myself reading this book to Marina and the Diamonds and Lana Del Rey. Marina and the Diamonds reminds me of summer and Lana Del Rey has that melancholic feel.

I'll be looking to borrow the next book from the school library for sure!

  1. Belly, oh dear. Isabel? I don't usually read a lot of contemporaries, but somehow, Jenny Han does sound like a author worth checking out.

    I like your snowflakes!

    1. Yes! They're so good, especially if you're on a contemporary kick! I don't usually read contemporaries either. Hahaha.

And thanks! I thought they were fitting considering the title of my blog is about winter and coffee. Hahaha.
