Synopsis:
Penelope Landlow has grown up with the knowledge that almost anything can be bought or sold—including body parts. She’s the daughter of one of the three crime families that control the black market for organ transplants.

Penelope’s surrounded by all the suffocating privilege and protection her family can provide, but they can't protect her from the autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise so easily.

And in her family's line of work no one can be safe forever.

All Penelope has ever wanted is freedom and independence. But when she’s caught in the crossfire as rival families scramble for prominence, she learns that her wishes come with casualties, that betrayal hurts worse than bruises, that love is a risk worth taking . . . and maybe she’s not as fragile as everyone thinks.

I received an e-ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion whatsoever nor did I receive any sort of compensation in exchange for this review.

Hold me like a breath is about a girl named Penelope with something called Idiopathic thrombocyotpenic purpura, which is a platelet disorder and causes her to bruise easily and become very fragile. Her body essentially destroys her own platelets. She's also one of the Landlows, one of the families in the black market organ trade. Because of this disorder of hers and her family's privilege, she lives a life of coddled luxury. She desires freedom and to experience the outside world, but her parents are suffocating her in fear of her safety.

I really enjoyed reading this book. You should all know by now that I adore books about crime. While this book didn't have as much as I would have loved, it still permeated the book in a way that I enjoyed, since this book is about crime families.

I loved that I didn't know where the danger was going to come from. The book is told from Penelope's perspective and so all the information that I had was the same as Penelope's. I was just as clueless as she was as to the things that were going on around her. And so when the big reveal of the danger that surrounded her and that she fell into came about, I was not quite as shocked as Penelope because I had been thinking about it but not really adamant about it.

I love Penelope. She has that lust for freedom that I can identify with. And when she finds herself in New York City, she easily charms and makes friends with the locals despite her situation. She has a strong and determined personality. I could overall relate to her well as a person, despite her criminal circumstances.

Love interest. Char. I really really like him. First, he's Chinese (which I am) and also from what Penelope is seeing of him, he's really hot. Great jawline, muscular with broad shoulders and he's adorable. He's super sweet on Penelope and like I said, he's adorable. I think I may add him to the book boyfriend harem.

Overall, Hold me Like a Breath is an action packed novel with some romance in between and a main character that really comes into her own.

Happy Reading!

  1. Glad to hear you enjoyed this one a lot, I'm not sure if I'd be too onboard with the ITP portrayal (as a nurse) from what I've heard from other reviews!
    Great review Ri!
